Dean Kallweit Architect was established by firm principal Dean Kallweit in 1997. Dean’s roots in residential design and construction run deep. Whether on the job site as a carpenter building homes during his high school and university years or as the principal of his own design firm, Dean has been involved in residential design and construction most of his working life. His hands-on, on-site experience has given him a healthy respect for the job site, trades and the craftsmanship they bring to each project.
Dean studied architecture at the University of British Columbia completing his graduate thesis under the thoughtful mentorship of Patricia Patkau in 1992. He then interned with local Vancouver firm Poon Gardner Garrett Architects & Planners (PGG), a company that specialized in health care, education and other institutional and commercial building types. At PGG Dean gained invaluable experience working on a wide variety of building types ranging in scope, scale and complexity from hospitals to tenant fit-outs, embassies to coffee shops. In 1996 Dean became a registered Member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (MAIBC).
In 1997, Dean returned to his roots in residential design and interest in smaller scale, more detail oriented architecture. He established DKA and worked directly with fledgling residential design firm Kallweit Graham Architecture until 2001 when he and his family pulled anchor and moved to Hong Kong, PRC. In Hong Kong, Dean continued to develop his practice, working on many residential resort and recreational projects back in Canada, particularly in Whistler and the interior of British Columbia. Dean returned to Vancouver permanently in 2007 and has been serving clients and growing his practice ever since.
